The growing crises of climate change, water shortages, and air pollution pose a severe risk to both human and animal existence on earth. Various global initiatives have been launched to raise awareness of these issues and encourage people to protect our natural environment and minimize ecological loss. One of the most popular movements is Earth Day, which is celebrated every year on April 22nd. The theme this year is ‘Invest In Our Planet.’
Wildlife sanctuaries and national parks are crucial to efforts to mitigate the impact of human development on natural ecosystems. We at Icertis are celebrating Earth Day 2022 by extending our ongoing support for crucial forest conservation work in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), a wildlife sanctuary in central India. In addition to contributing directly to the reserve, Icertis is working with various non-profit organizations to support the surrounding community to ensure everyone benefits from the preservation of this crucial habitat:
Education quality improvement:
There are around 80 schools in the Tadoba region. Their infrastructure trails behind other schools due to their remoteness and many of the students are the first in their families to attend school. We have partnered with the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) to improve school infrastructure and conduct classes on how to reduce human-wildlife conflict. Icertis’ HR team recently volunteered at a school as part of an ongoing infrastructure improvement project.
Solid waste management:
The key to protecting TATR is increasing tourism in the region, which creates economic opportunities for local residents. However, this leads to an increase in plastic waste. To manage this waste and convert it into usable material, we have partnered with reCharkha, a social organization that recycles plastic into beautiful textile products while creating livelihood opportunities for local women.
Human-wildlife conflict management:
There are many villages and resorts around Tadoba, and the influx of tourists has increased in recent years. As the population of people visiting and living around the reserve increases, there is an increased risk of human-wildlife conflicts. To mitigate this and help manage the increasing pressure, we have donated a patrol-and-transport vehicle to the local authorities, which they can use to help rescue injured animals and, when needed, relocate them away from human populations.
Robert Swan, the author of Red Earth, said: “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” To help preserve our natural environment, we all must contribute to our resources. We are thrilled to have partnered with many great organizations and are honored to do our part to #takecareofcommunity.
We wish you a Happy Earth Day!
